We’re on a mission to get the nation comfortable with periods. Periods are part of everyday life but with there being so much stigma around menstrual topics, it can sometimes make us feel uncomfortable or unsupported for such a natural process. In fact, it impacts the way we feel about our periods and our bodies. We’ve teamed up with Victoria from EmpowerPeriods to create a comfortable and safe space to chat about all things related to periods.
How comfortable do you feel talking about your period?
When we spoke with our you, our community, whilst the majority said you felt somewhat comfortable discussing periods, there was a feeling that it depended on the environment and attitudes of those around you. For example, discussing periods at work felt more uncomfortable than discussing this with a closed group of friends.
We also discovered that:
- Over half of our community sometimes felt judged when telling others they were on their period.
- Over two-thirds (66%) feel inclined to hide being on their period from others, either often or occasionally.
- 65% said they experienced feelings of anxiety or shame when leaking on their period in public.
- Over a third felt that period stigma had impacted their self-confidence when on their period.
Getting the nation comfortable with periods
Since launching in 2017, we’ve been tackling stigma and normalising conversations around periods, and our Let’s Get Comfy campaign builds upon our efforts so far. As part of this campaign, we’re proud to be working with Victoria Causley from EmpowerPeriods to launch a new series across TikTok and Instagram opening up real and honest discussion, from managing a period leak in public to normalising rest on your period. This series is all about making period talk as casual and open as it should be. With topics ranging from the basics to things we rarely discuss (but totally should), Let’s Get Comfy is here to make the journey to period knowledge easy, informative, and fun. It’s a safe space to discuss periods, learn about periods (as there’s always something new to discover about our menstrual well-being), ask questions, and be part of these important conversations.
Get to know Victoria from EmpowerPeriods
EmpowerPeriods was founded in 2021 by Victoria Causley to raise menstrual health awareness, confront outdated taboos, and empower everyone to speak openly about periods and pain.
As Victoria shares, “After facing what is now a 9-year journey to find a diagnosis for suspected endometriosis (if you know, you know), I felt on my own and, to be honest, desperate. I was desperate to find someone who felt the same way as me, so I didn’t feel like I was going crazy. EmpowerPeriods was born from that desire to build community, and now we’re one among thousands of sufferers and supporters helping each other navigate the challenges of period pain.
I share not only my own stories with difficult periods but also amplify the voices of others who deserve to be heard above the pain. From bleeding through too many times and ruining your favourite jeans to enduring the emotional toll of PMDD (Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder)—I’ve been there. And if I haven’t, then I guarantee someone in the EmpowerPeriods community has.”
